Following the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Kherson region, Ukraine, on the night of 6 June, 2023, Ukrainians face an insurmountable catastrophe. This is an added devastation amidst the other horrors of Russia’s invasion. The massive reservoir behind the dam was one of Ukraine’s most vital geographical structures. Its waters irrigated huge swaths of agricultural land in one of the world’s largest grain exporting nations.

People are suffering devastating consequences of the collapse of the dam at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station. This has resulted in the flooding of nearby settlements along the Dnipro River. Water sources and the Black Sea are being increasingly contaminated by dead animal carcasses, land mines, various waste materials, and more. Thousands of people are without potable water, food, medicine, and homes. According to the UN, 700,000 people are, now, in desperate need of drinking water in Southern Ukraine.

Parts of the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions in the South and Southeast of Ukraine are suffering from disrupted water supplies. The Health Ministry of Ukraine warned of potential health hazards due to leaked chemicals in the water, and has urged residents to drink only bottled safe water, and to use safe water when cooking.

Residents in areas of Russian occupied Southern Ukraine are without any help. People are literally sitting on their roof tops to escape the floodwaters, awaiting rescue. It is impossible to determine how many people may die.

The consequences of this disaster will be felt for decades in Southern Ukraine. Together we must help people survive, for today and tomorrow.
